Currency Information

The local currency in Burma is the Burmese Kyat (pronounced Chat) or MMK. The Kyat is a closed currency and cannot be brought in or out of Burma. We suggest that you take United States Dollars (USD) with you which can either be used directly as currency in most locations or changed into Burmese Kyat at the Yangon Airport. Please note that US dollars used must be notes issued post 2006 in pristine condition. Burma is a cash-only economy and apart from a few exceptions the local cash machines do not accept international cards. Most hotels, restaurants and shops will only accept cash (US Dollars or Kyat) as well. Credit cards and travellers cheques are not accepted as forms of payment. Therefore, it is very important that you budget carefully and ensure you have the right form of currency before you arrive in the country, so please ensure you bring enough cash in US Dollars with you for the duration of your trip.

14th May 2019 Important Information:

We have been informed by our local agent in Burma that unfortunately, the water levels are too low for the Mandalay to Bagan cruise to operate; Due to this land transfers have been arranged. To ensure you do not miss out on any planned excursions we have arranged a visit to Ta Mike Thar Village to replace the visit to the Latkka Village. The Ta Mike Thar Village is very similar to the Latkka Village, it is a small village located near Bagan where you can observe local people weaving bamboo baskets and get a sense of everyday village life.
